    Finger Millet Flakes for Breakfast – 3 Ways (Sweet & Savory)

    I have written enough about the goodness of Finger Millets or Ragi here. To explain my love for Ragi in one sentence, It’s a millet that is local, very nutritious, economical and sustainable to grow. I don’t need any more reasons to eat Ragi/Finger millets.

    It’s been one of my new year resolution to eat more Ragi. Fortunately all of us love Ragi in my family. We make Ragi dosa, Ragi rotti and of course the famous ‘Ragi Mudde’. Ragi Mudde is a ball or dumpling made just with Ragi and water. Both are cooked till it reaches a consistency which is a little harder than semi solid and then rolled into round balls. A big Ragi ball with some simple curry made with greens, lentils or vegetables is a poor man’s meal. By itself this Ragi ball/dumpling is quite flavorless. Since it’s sticky and hard to chew, it’s simply rolled on some curry and swallowed in small portions! My husband grew up eating it but fortunately I could acquire the taste for this unique dish very easily. Unlike most children my 4 year old daughter loves them and can eat it for lunch every day.





    When I received an email enquiring about a products review from ‘Soulfull’ I was pleasantly surprised to know that their products are made of Ragi! To begin with I was thrilled to know that there is finally a brand using a local millet instead of other more popular imported grains. I went on to their Facebook page to read more and I was pretty impressed with their product range and food philosophy. I receive product review requests often but I always politely decline them as I do not want to feature anything on my blog which doesn’t go hand in hand with my food philosophy. But with Soulfull, I was finally happy that there is a product which I would be happy to share with you all!

    Here’s my quick review of Soulfull’s products. I am also sharing 3 recipes which I have created using them.




    A little more about Soulfull:

    Soulfull brings you a range of packaged food that balances health with taste and hence their tag line deliciously healthy.?

    Their? initial range of products focus on the breakfast segment with Ragi based breakfast cereals and Instant Dosa Mixes. Their ragi based breakfast cereals are currently available in 3 flavors : Original, Cocoa-Lite & Banana. Their dosa mix range has 3 variants : Ragi Dosa, Rava Dosa & Adai Dosa.?


    Savory Ragi/Finger Millet Flakes


    Today I tried their Breakfast Cereals which are Ragi or Finger Millet flakes. To keep it short I very very happy with them.

    The ‘Original’ flavor which is the plain Ragi flakes was my favorite. I liked the fact that they are not sweetened! The best thing about this was that they have a very neutral flavor which works perfectly well with almost any topping you try with it. I always like to flavour and sweeten my cereals myself so that I have complete control over how I eat it. I also like the ‘Cocoa-Lite’ flavor as I am a complete chocoholic. This Cocoa Lite is not ooverly sweet to chocolaty… it’s mildly bitter with a very minimum cocoa flavor in it. My least favorite was the ‘Banana’ Flavour. Of course it’s a personal preference as I am not a great fan of Banana flavor in general but other than that, I also felt like it was a tad bit sweeter than required with a flavor which is very synthetic.

    The best thing about Soulfull is the fact they have products with a difference. Their breakfast cereals are completely gluten fee and it’s a great initiative to bring this humble millets to the super market shelves. I think the process of Ragi being made into these lovely flakes might result in it loosing a little bit of it’s nutritional value but those who can not really include Ragi in their diet in any other way, this products sounds like a great discovery.

    Will I buy this? Probably not but that doesn’t have anything to do with how good their products are. We never really eat cold breakfast as we always prefer hot fresh savory South Indian Breakfasts. I would anyway reach for a fresh hot Ragi dosa instead of a bowl of Ragi flakes. Since time is never really a concern for me, I don’t have the need for ‘Instant’ food in my life. But I know not everybody is as lucky as me. If you love eating fresh hot dosas for breakfast and don’t have the time to plan it ahead, Soulfull also has a range of Instant Dosa mixes for people like you. I am pretty sure they will taste great as well.

    You can use any other flakes like Bajra, Corn, Whole wheat? or Oats in place of Ragi Flakes in the following recipes.

    Ragi/Finger Millet Flakes with Bananas, Sesame Seeds & Jaggery Syrup.

    • 1/2 cup Soulfull ‘Original’ Ragi Flakes
    • 1/2 a Banana cut into slices
    • 1/2 cup cold milk
    • 1 tbsp or less Jaggery syrup
    • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds

    I loved the simple favors here. You can use any other fresh fruit of your choice instead of Banana. You can use? any nut or seed milk ins tea of cow milk. Instead of sesame seeds, try almonds, cashews or sunflower seeds. I liked the flavor of Jaggery against the earthy flavor of Ragi but feel free to use honey or maple syrup instead.

    • 1/2 cup Soulfull ‘Original’ Ragi Flakes
    • 1 tbsp finely chopped shallots/onion
    • 1/4 cup finely chopped tomatoes
    • a handful of mung bean sprouts
    • a handful of peanuts
    • 1 tbsp finely chopped cilantro
    • salt

    Since I am not a fan of sweet breakfast I thought of trying a savory version of it. This recipe is great both as breakfast and as a quick snack if you want to cut down your sugar intake. The crunchy flakes are perfect with the crunch of peanuts, sprouts and onions. The juicy bits of tomatoes add just the right amount of moisture. Please serve it as soon as you mix it up as it’ll turn soggy over time. You can add other finitely chopped or grated raw vegetables too.

    • 1/2 cup Soulfull ‘Cocoa Lite’ Ragi Flakes
    • 1/2 cup cold milk
    • 1/2 tsp unsweetend Cocoa
    • 1 tbsp Peanut Butter
    • 1 tbsp Stawberry Jam

    This chocolatey delight is almost good enough to be a dessert! I love the fruity tanginess of my homemade strawberry jam against the lovely crunchy sweet ragi flakes but a few fresh strawberries would have been even better! Replace the peanut butter with some slivers of dark chocolate for a even more decadent breakfast. Once again feel free to use any nut or seed milk instead of cow milk and toasted nuts will taste great here too. I have used homemade peanut butter and strawberry jams here. If you are buying them, make sure you buy good quality (Organic of possible) ones without several unnecessary additives in them.
